SaschaFounder & Head Instructor

Sascha comes from a family of professional artists, musicians, and creative entrepreneurs. Sascha traveled and independently studied art through seven countries in Europe from 1992-93. She attended Antioch College in Ohio and then transferred and graduated from Marylhurst University with a degree in Fine Art. She has taught art at multiple public, private, and charter schools since 1997 as well as founding her own art school, Fine Art Starts in 1997. She was the Director of all public and private cultural and educational programs at the prestigious Carnegie Center in Oregon City and also served on the Board for the Oregon Art Education Association.

Sascha's personal artwork is found in private and University collections mostly on the West Coast. Sascha consults with, teaches at, and assists schools in developing fine art programs. As an Art Specialist she enjoys teaching mixed age classes at her own FAS studio, Touchstone School, Alliance Charter Academy and Molalla River Academy, and especially likes working alongside classroom teachers on integrated studies projects.

Sascha has inspired and taught many awarded and scholarship-winning students, many of whom have gone on to pursue careers in graphic design, animation, and fashion design at reputable schools (with scholarships) such as the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in LA, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and Pacific NW College of Art.

Her teaching style is infused with Love and Logic, and based on Discipline Based Art Education (DBAE), combining art production, art history, criticism, and aesthetics together.

In her free time Sascha loves traveling with her husband of nine years and their two amazing children, ages 6 & 8 (who also love sushi, art, and music)!

kateYear Around Studio Assistant & Instructor

This is my third year working at Fine Art Starts and I'm really delighted to be in a creative environment. I've been an art student of Sascha's for six years, and have finally discovered my passion - kids' art. I also love traveling, working with horses, reading, learning the violin and guitar, being out in nature as much as possible, and spending time with my family.

Anne

Jake Instructor

I consider myself lucky to have received art education in middle school and high school while growing up in Gainesville, Florida. I continued the study of studio art and art history in college (where I majored in English and creative writing), and later received professional instruction in watercolor and pastels at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach Florida; plein air landscape painting in Italy from Maddine Insalaco; and illustration from Lee White and David Hohn here in Portland.

For as long as I can remember, art and writing have been at the center of my work. Even during my ten years in the corporate world, I was writing and designing for business clients. In 2001, I went back to school to earn my Masters in Fine Arts in Creative Writing. Much of my coursework explored the intersection of text and illustration. Since completing my degree, I have split my time between being a mom, pursuing my own art and writing projects, and teaching kids to pursue their creative visions.

I was thrilled to begin teaching with Sascha in January of 2009, and I’m also excited to share the Fine Art Starts program alongside her at Alliance Charter Academy beginning in the fall of 2009.

Beth

Beth Instructor

Beth attended the University of Oregon in 1992 and studied Art History. She then transferred to and graduated from Pacific Northwest College of Art with a BFA in Graphic Arts in 1995.

As well as teaching at Fine Art Starts in Oregon City, she currently teaches the preschool art classes at Multnomah Art Center in Multnomah Village. Beth is the Copresident of the Art Literacy Program for Stephenson Elementary school in SW Portland and teaches volunteer art classes any chance she gets. She is also a grant writer for funding art education.

"I really enjoy being a part of a creative community. It helps me achieve new ways of seeing both art and life. I have seen so many students gain confidence in themselves through exploring the arts. It teaches thinking as well as memory skills and allows students to express their feelings, beliefs, and experiences. Sharing the world of art with children is so rewarding."

In addition to teaching, Beth has been a practicing Graphic Artist, Art Director and freelance artist for 15 years. Her specialty is print design. When she isn't designing corporate logos, brochures or wedding invitations, you can find her painting and print making in her home studio. Art is a constant everyday ingredient to her life. For the past eight years, her work has been found in various gallery and café shows around Portland. Her current works are on view at the Multnomah Art Center Instructors Exhibit.

Her teaching philosophies and disciplines include Discipline Based Art Education (DBAE) and a mixture of knowledge and experiences drawn from time spent honing her skills in graphic design, drawing, painting, print making, mosaics, sculpture, photography, yoga, dance and a love for working with children.

Beth also enjoys hiking in local forests collecting ideas for her next masterpiece with her two wonderful children, ages 4 and 7, who share her passion for art and natural sciences.
