ART Camp 2024 was awesome!
We can't wait to see you next summer! Please check back for the 2025 camp schedule on November 1st.
Camps are held in SW Portland at Forest Hall on the WHUUF property. The room has wood floors and tall windows that look out into a lovely forested area with access to a recognized green sanctuary. We make artwork indoors and outside in the magical, treed space. Map here.
Students are introduced to step-by-step skills in drawing, digital art, painting, printmaking, illustration and clay! Kids practice balancing their own ideas with what they've learned to make unique artwork (not crafty stuff). Small group instruction with an Art Show on Fridays. Each Art Camp day has a different spirit theme (PJ day, crazy hair day, etc.)!

Is my camper ready?
If your child is headed to kindergarten this fall, has experienced preschool, is toileting independently, and able to follow directions safely, then they're likely ready for half-day camp (and possibly full day). K-8 grade campers who are used to going to full days of school usually enroll in full day camps, but are also welcome to attend any of the half-day camps if it fits your schedule best.
Our program requires that campers are able to follow directions, work collaboratively with others as well as independently at times. We mix up the day between focused, seated instruction and breaks with movement out in nature. We are not a sports camp or a daycare program. We want our campers to want to be at ART Camp, making art! If their behavior demonstrates they're not ready for our program in a way that takes away from their own experience or the positive experience of others, we'll let you know on Monday and assess the best resolution on a case by case basis.

Camp Descriptions
Art Exploration
Draw, paint and sculpt with clay in this popular camp week. If you've taken it before, it’s new every week and every summer! Sign up for one or more! Explore skills in drawing, painting, and hands-on clay! We'll fill the week with a kaleidoscope of color and fun projects! Each day has a different theme such as nature, animals, great artists, cultural projects, "Hoppers" (free-choice time for self-directed projects like collage, paper making, and free draw).
Clay, Sculpture & Pottery
Get your hands into clay and exercise the right-hand side of your brain! Learn basic hand-sculpting techniques (coil, slab, negative and additive sculpture) to create 3-dimensional projects in clay that will be glazed and fired. "Hoppers" stations for free-choice time available this week, along with a pottery wheel experience. No previous experience required. Clay pick-up date will be later in the summer, exact date TBA (depends on the drying time and firing schedule).
Digital Art
Welcome to the world of Procreate! This is an exciting course taught by a digital art enthusiast and Instructor. Learn to use the animation software, or be challenged by projects that will help you become an even more flexible thinker and creator in the digital world.
We'll fill the days with digital practice and balance it with traditional drawing media. Beginning digital artists will draw on paper and learn how to color it digitally, working with layers and advancing in technique. We'll break up the day with plenty of time for social opportunities and spending time outside in nature!
Please bring your iPad and Apple pencil. Don't have one or both? Please contact us by email if you are interested in borrowing tech equipment during the time you're with us on site.
Please plan to install Procreate on your device before your camp week begins. The cost is $12.99 in the App store.
Mix it Up
Experience a variety of projects in drawing, painting, and 2-D mixed media! Each day is different, so be ready for lots of creative encounters, even if you’ve taken this camp before. Students are introduced to real fine art skills, with which they balance their own ideas to make unique artwork (no crafty-schmafty stuff). Each day has a different theme and a special day for "Hoppers" (free-choice time to explore a variety of materials like paper making, mandalas and more). Camp includes drawing, painting, printmaking and mixed media.
Manga, Comics & Illustration
Join us for one of the only manga, cartooning, graphic novel & character design camps around! During this camp week, students are introduced to real fine art skills in drawing and illustration with a focus on character design, manga, comics, graphic novels and cartooning. Artists will practice recognizing the stylistic differences between American and Japanese comics, along with learning about different stylization techniques. Bring your creative characters and stories to life as you learn more about character design, proportions, shading, storyline, inking cels and comic covers! Returning and advanced students will be challenged while new students learn strong basics while using pencil, ink, colored pencil, marker, and some watercolor.
